Transport 'key to success' of Cambridgeshire economy

Date: 30/4/2013
Improving transport links is essential to providing the support necessary to stimulate growth in the Cambridgeshire economy, candidates set to take part in the upcoming local elections have said.As the BBC reports, one of the key issues being debated is that of the apparent need to expand the A14, with many local businesses claiming that they would benefit from such an improvement.
But candidates disagree over which projects should be prioritised, with Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group Kilian Bourke claiming that while the party supports upgrading the A14, it also wants to "negotiate a less costly scheme" to overhaul the Huntingdon Bypass and Girton Interchange.
And Nick Clarke, leader of the ruling Conservative group, explained that much has already been done in a bid to support economic growth in the county.
"We have been active spending £20m on super-fast broadband and we have brought the A14 (expansion) back on the table," he argued.
Meanwhile, Paul Sales of Labour said that while A14 improvements are important, the introduction of a potential toll road would be unacceptable.
