Date: 25/10/2011
Robin Carlisle, the minister for transport and public works in the Western Cape has said he supports national transport minister Sibusiso Ndebele's plans to halt toll road projects, AllAfrica.com has reported.Mr Carlisle has said he supports any national decision to move capital from private to public transport.
According to the domestic website, he said: "If we are going to spend our big money on commuter rail and road public transport and getting freight off the roads and onto rail, then this is a policy we can walk together."
However, he was firm when reiterating the Western Cape Transport and Public Works Department's stance that road infrastructure and standards must be maintained in addition to public transport investment.
All tolling projects of national roads were halted by Mr Ndebele to allow for an investigation into the issues that have been raised by various concerned parties.
