Transport Minister hails Lake District's green travel schemes

Date: 20/3/2013
Transport Minister Norman Baker has praised initiatives designed to improve sustainable travel in the Lake District, the Westmorland Gazette reports. On a visit to the region, Mr Baker trialled the various carbon friendly ways to get around the national park, with a Go-Lakes Travel programme having recently been set up to provide low-emission car hire to visitors.
The scheme also involves introducing electric charge points around the Lake District, with a target of expanding the area's sustainable hire fleet to 15 vehicles by 2015.
"We have now launched the Government's strategy for a joined-up transport system, so it was pleasing to see first-hand how this vision is already being delivered in the Lake District," the Minister said.
"I am convinced the Go-Lakes initiative offers holidaymakers the opportunity to make real sustainable travel choices."
The Go-Lakes initiative is a £6.91 million project funded by the Department for Transport and local partners, with an overarching aim of improving travel options in the region.
