Transport minister offers advice on shared space schemes

Date: 21/10/2011
Shared space schemes are increasing in popularityand transport minister Norman Baker has released new guidance on how they can be well designed.Local councils looking to regenerate their high street, who choose a shared space system, can often find it difficult to successfully manage.
This is because in conventional streets, behaviour is governed by infrastructure such as signs and road markings, which are not present in shared space, increasing the importance of good design.
Shared spaces aim to remove the traditional division of pedestrians and vehicles.
A well-designed scheme can reduce the dominance of motor vehicles through lower speed limits and encourage drivers to be more aware of pedestrians.
Mr Baker said: "We want councils to design high-quality public spaces which enhance the local environment and improve the lives of local people. In some cases, they will decide that shared space is the best solution."
In particular the guidance, based on a two year research project, emphasises engaging with the community and incorporating the needs of a range of people.
