Transport minister will make A1 'a route of national importance'

Date: 20/9/2010
The stretch of the A1 between Newcastle and Scotland has been identified as a route of national importance.Transport Minister Mike Penning announced proposals to reclassify the road so it can be considered for funding from the national budget for road improvements.
He said: "Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff make a significant contribution to the UK economy and it is vital that the routes connecting them to their nearest strategic destinations in England are recognised."
It is important the A1 is distinguished for its worth to freight and other traffic travelling between Newcastle and Edinburgh, Mr Penning continued.
The Transport Minister's plans will also see a number of roads linking Bootle and the Twelve Quays Ferry Terminal in Birkenhead, Merseyside, be termed a route of strategic national importance in recognition of the terminal's role as the main gateway for vehicles between Liverpool and Belfast.
Recently, Chair of the UK Roads Board Matthew Lugg told the Guardian the roads budget is set to be cut by between 25 and 50 per cent in the government's forthcoming spending review.
