Transport networks 'will be severely affected during Games'

Date: 2/9/2011
Businesses with bases in London should endeavour to take steps now to prepare for next year's Olympic and Paralympic Games.Such is the advice of Transport for London, which notes that the increased demand from passengers next summer will have a substantial impact on the city's travel network.
As a result, the department, alongside London 2012's organisers, has been offering employers the chance to attend special workshops where they will be given tips on how to plan their operations ahead of and during the Games.
While all of the visitors and business expected to flood into the capital could present companies with major opportunities, if they do not prepare well in advance then they may miss out.
As well as these benefits, enterprises are also being urged to plan how they will compensate for the additional pressure on the transport system so that they are able to continue operating.
Workshops that have taken place to date have provided ideas on how to optimise deliveries, freight and servicing during the Olympics, along with how to initiate plans for flexible working for staff members whose movements may be limited by busy periods on the public transport network.
Transport Minister Norman Baker has also issued his own advice, recommending that regular commuters in the City opt to cycle or walk to the office.
He also told attendees at a BT event that videoconferencing could be an option.
