Transport plan to clear Australian stadium in an hour

Date: 14/12/2012
A transport plan has been put together by the state government in East Perth, which will clear spectators from the Burswood stadium vicinity in less than an hour. The AU$340 million (£222 million) proposals are designed to get as many as 50,000 people away from the area in a safe and efficient manner.
One of the main features of the system will be a $54 million footbridge linking the stadium to East Perth, preventing roads and other transport infrastructure from hindering dispersion.
The stadium has capacity for 60,000 spectators, but the government is assured that there will never be more than 83 per cent of the visitors travelling via public transport.
At nearby Subiaco football stadium, just 40 per cent of the fans travel to games by public transport, which gives a realistic view of the levels which can be expected.
The cost for the plan has been predicted at AU$298 million in today’s money, but taking inflation into account, it will come to AU$340 million.
This will include AU$54 million for the footbridge, AU$150 million for new railway station infrastructure, AU$10 million for roadworks and AU$12 million to get buses running to the area.
It is thought that around 35,000 people will decide to leave the games by train, with 28,000 of them able to do so via the new Perth Stadium Station, which will have six platforms.
More than 14,000 are predicted to use the new footbridge to cross over the river, with a further 8,600 to use the existing Windan bridge.
There will be the capacity for another 14,000 to travel by bus, split between the new stadium services, capable of carrying 8,100, and shuttle buses with capacity for 6,200.
The stadium is being built in an attempt to transform the peninsula upon which it will stand into a tourist destination and provide a venue where world-class sporting events can take place.
Premier Colin Barnett said: “This is a world class transport proposal to complement our world class stadium.”
