Transport Secretary confirms Plug-In car scheme

Date: 28/7/2010

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has announced the Plug-In Car Grant will commence in January 2011.

The scheme offers individuals funding of up to £5,000 if they purchase a plug-in hybrid, electric or hydrogen fuel cell car if they meet the standards set by the Office for Low Emissions Vehicles.

Mr Hammond said the government is committed to low-carbon growth and tackling climate change.

"We are sending a clear signal that Britain is open for business and that we are committed to greening our economy. This will ensure that the UK is a world leader in low emission vehicles," he added.

Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, noted it is a significant commitment from the regime and will create jobs within the motor industry, while promoting low-carbon vehicles.

Earlier this week, Roads Minister Mike Penning visited the UK's longest under-land road tunnel, which has been created to reduce traffic congestion between London and Portsmouth.
