Transport Secretary to look at proposals to benefit UK truckers?

Date: 17/5/2010

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond is thought to be looking at options surrounding a 'pay-as-you-drive' scheme for foreign heavy goods vehicles.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) noted it is pleased by reports that have claimed the official will explore the notion, which would see non-UK nationals paying to use the country's roads.

It has also been suggested the Transport Secretary will look at plans to introduce a 'stabiliser' system to bring down fuel duty when costs increase.

Chief Executive of the RHA Geoff Dunning stated: "A similar, workable and cost-effective system was proposed four years ago."

He added the establishment backed the proposals then and the RHA is now calling for a consultation to take place as soon as possible.

Mr Hammond, who is originally from Essex, was named as the new Secretary of State for Transport on May 12th.

Before his appointment the Conservative MP for Runnymede and Weybridge had worked in a number of departments in the shadow cabinet, his previous role being as the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
