Transport Secretary unveils Institute of Railway Research

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin spoke of the importance of the nation's rail network when he officially opened the Institute of Railway Research at Huddersfield University yesterday (April 15th).Highlighting the need to ensure that the UK's infrastructure is able to modernise effectively in the coming years, the Secretary explained that the Institute is expected to play a key role in supporting the development of new technologies.
"I would like to congratulate the University of Huddersfield on what it has set out to do. You are training the country's engineers and railway leaders of the future," he said. "There will be great demand for them, and great opportunities too."
The Institute will be headed up by Professor Simon Iwnicki, who showed the Secretary how computer modelling will be used to find solutions to challenges facing the railways.
A total of 16 researchers will be based in the specialist labs, working on overseas projects as well as those related to Britain.
