Transport charity takes ownership of electric car

Date: 17/11/2009

A transport charity in Scotland has received an electric car, which is the first-ever to be used by a rural community in the country.

The Cairngorms Electric Vehicle is intended to transport needy passengers to their appointments in the area.

Community safety minister Fergus Ewing presented the keys to the Badenoch and Strathspey Community Transport Company.

"We want Scotland to be at the forefront of building a sustainable low carbon economy of the future," said Mr Ewing.

The car is charged by wind power or through a domestic electrical power outlet and can tow its own wind turbine.

The electric vehicle can reportedly reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour and has a range of 100 miles.

Volunteers of the charity will report back about the car's efficiency while going about their charitable duties.ADNFCR-2726-ID-19463958-ADNFCR
