TRL develops new cycling package

TRL develops new cycling package

Date: 10/6/2011

As a result of overwhelming interest in its Cycling Environment Review Systems (CERS), TRL (the Transport Research Laboratory) has announced the further development of its software package to include data collection forms and an on-street manual.

All are designed to support further investment in bicycle use, both in the UK and overseas.

Slotting into TRL's streetaudit - a tool that realises the maximum value of street appraisals - CERS boasts an in-built Geographic Information Systems mapping module and simple-to-use tools, amongst other features.

It is hoped the package will become a key factor in offering improved provisions for cyclists, by considering elements such as safety and comfort.

With demand for getting about on two wheels growing, TRL points out that it can be easy to forget that bicycle users are still vulnerable when on the road.

As a result, it notes the importance of actively designing cycle networks, rather than developing them as an afterthought.

The development process took into account feedback from international government organisations, local authorities in the UK and other interested parties.

The news comes after road safety charity Brake claimed that 20 per cent more Britons than those who currently cycle would be more inclined to travel on two wheels if there were dedicated paths for them to use.
