TRL to help Qatar in sourcing sustainable materials

TRL to help Qatar in sourcing sustainable materials

Date: 9/9/2011

TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) has won a major project that will assist Qatar in the rapid redevelopment of its existing infrastructure.

Announcing it had secured the work as part of the National Priority Research Programme of the Qatar National Research Fund from the Qatar Foundation, TRL explained a steady and sustainable supply of construction materials is required to transform the country's infrastructure, but there is a shortage of raw goods available.

To overcome this challenge, TRL is to consider the innovative possibility of making use of recycled or secondary aggregate materials, which could allow the construction sector to reduce its reliance on imports.

This could also lead to the industry having more control over the quality of the goods it uses and the price paid for them.

Working alongside Qatar Standards' Ministry of Environment, support partner Qatar University and local aggregate supplier Qatar Construction and Development Company, TRL will examine the potential of replacing a large proportion of virgin materials with those that are recycled, along with evaluating likely reliable supply chains.

The Qatar Foundation is a government-funded organisation that aims to utilise science and education to address societal needs.
