TRL: Transport can help mitigate GHG emissions

Date: 11/5/2011

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transport are overtaking pollutants from other sectors in some countries, prompting a group of industry representatives to join together in order to tackle the issue.

Next month will mark the Partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLOCAT) - Bridging the Gap Working Group event at the Gustav Stresemann Institut in Bonn, Germany, where the focus will be on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) with regards to vehicles.

TRL (the Transport Research Laboratory) is set to attend, where it will join forces with the likes of Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbei, Veolia, Transdev, the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy and the International Association of Public Transport to raise awareness of the role that the sector should play in mitigating GHG levels.

Taking place on June 9th, the event will assess whether or not NAMAs are able to deliver, after it was noted that the Clean Development Mechanism - which awards certified emission reduction credits to green projects in developing nations - has so far made only a small inroad into the potential offered by the transport industry.

It is hoped that the event will culminate in a post-2012 agreement that will see the land-based vehicle sector becoming sustainable.

Experts from TRL will provide updates on recent climate talks that took place in Bangkok and the lessons that were learnt from the Transport Measures And Policies (T-MAPPER) project.

More information about the event can be found at TRL's website.
