TRL's Britta Lang to address Gulf Traffic Conference

Date: 31/10/2012

Research Fellow Britta Lang, who works for TRL, is to address the Gulf Traffic Conference in November.

As a headline speaker, Ms Lang will be speaking on the first day of the conference which runs from November 19th to 21st.

The title of the session will be The Potential of Driving Simulators in Delivering a Joined-up Road Safety Strategy, which is an area TRL is doing a significant amount of work on in the Middle East.

Ms Lang will look to address a number of areas in relation to simulators and how they can be utilised to the best effect.

These will include standardising training, ensuring that all of those who drive in an organisation receive the same level of development and experience of unusual conditions.

She will also cover cognitive processes in real-time, analysis of trainee performance and driver behaviour in relation to simulators.

In a broader sense, Ms Lang will look at how policy makers and legislators can use the technology to inform their decision making processes as well as the police looking to enforce road traffic rules.

Ms Lang has praised Abu Dhabi for its work on road safety. She said: "Abu Dhabi has progressed very well in the last three years regarding its Decade of Action on Road Safety, and in terms of casualty reductions and financial savings the emirate has already surpassed its original ten year targets."

She elaborated on the progress it has made, suggesting that even more ambitious targets can be achieved in the future.

TRL has been working alongside the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport since 2009 when road fatalities stood at 409.

Since then they have been decreasing steadily with 334 reported for the entirety of 2011 and so far this year there have been 121 on Abu Dhabi's roads.

Ms Lang said: "Now many Gulf countries are quite rightly showing considerable interest in the development of road safety strategies.

"It is very encouraging that road safety has become a priority in the region, and each Gulf country is at various stages of the development and implementation of safety plans."
