Tyne and Wear Metro upgrade set for £23 million funding boost

Date: 13/2/2013
The project to upgrade the Tyne and Wear Metro network in the North-East is set to benefit from a £23 million funding boost, Local Transport Minister Norman Baker revealed last week. With a total of £93 million worth of support now made available to the initiative - the maximum possible funding under the 2010 Funding Agreement for repairing and upgrading the Metro system - work will now take place to improve the service over the course of the next three years.
"This is a major programme of renewal of the Metro infrastructure and will bring real benefits to the people and economy of the North-East," the Minister explained.
Connecting the centre of Newcastle with coastal areas in Whitley Bay, South Shields and an array of other locations, the Metro is the busiest light rail network outside of London in the UK, and Mr Baker added that the (DfT) Department for Transport is determined to support "efforts to deliver better transport for everyone and to cut carbon emissions."
