Tyre Safety Month '20p' campaign launched

Date: 2/10/2009
Hundreds of garages across the UK are encouraging people to check the depth of their tyre treads. The move is part of Tyre Safety Month which began yesterday (October 1st)
In an effort to get people to inspect tyres, TyreSafe is suggesting that a 20p coin can help discover if tread depth is sufficient.
Drivers should insert a 20p into the main grooves of the tyre and if the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted, then tread depth is unlikely to be sufficient and should be checked by a specialist.
TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson said that depth of tread was an important issue as the months get wetter.
"There are still far too many accidents and fatalities occurring every day which could have been avoided if the driver had paid more attention to the condition of their tyres," he said.
Skoda is offering its customers free tyre checks as part of the campaign.
