UK 'can achieve vehicle recycling targets'

Date: 9/2/2011

The UK can achieve targets for recycling vehicles, in the opinion of one sector commentator.

Jonathan Visscher, a Spokesman for The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), notes that European manufacturers are looking to achieve a recycle, re-use and recover rate of 95 per cent.

"In the UK, treatment facilities authorised by vehicle manufacturers have consistently exceeded the 85 per cent level since 2006 and all facilities in Europe are working towards a very impressive 95 per cent recovery level by 2015," he adds.

He goes on to suggest that this target can be achieved by following some of the suggestions in the SMMT's Sustainability Report.

In addition, Mr Visscher claims that the removal of the Self-Scrap box on the DVLA's registration documentation could help to prevent the unauthorised destruction of vehicles.

According to the SMMT, the car is one of the most effectively recovered and recycled consumer products.

It notes that its parts are frequently used again in vehicles or for other purposes.
