UK 'needs greater incentive' to use low-carbon vehicles

Date: 14/3/2012
The government must provide greater incentives to encourage take-up of low-carbon vehicles in the UK, one organisation believes.According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the coalition needs to continue with initiatives such as the Plug-In Car and Van Grant, as this will encourage both individuals and businesses to consider purchasing these motors.
Yesterday, the group spoke to senior MPs on why the need to sustain growth and encourage investment is so important.
SMMT Chief Executive Paul Everitt said: "The UK motor industry has made steady progress during the last 18 months with increased production, substantial new investment and growing exports."
He urged the government to ensure this trend continues, by encouraging investment in skills, capital equipment and research and development.
Business Secretary Vince Cable recently announced the See Inside Manufacturing scheme - which was established by the SMMT and encourages automotive firms to show young people what it is like working in the industry - will continue into 2012
