UK 'to offer more road safety education courses'

Date: 12/5/2011

Careless driving could be made an offence that is subject to a fixed penalty, under new plans set out by the government.

The Department for Transport has revealed that should the proposals go ahead police officers will be in a better position to effectively the tackle reckless motoring that puts the safety of others at risk.

Meanwhile, drivers who are disqualified would need to take another test before they could regain their licence.

In addition, Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has suggested working towards improving road safety knowledge by offering more educational courses as an alternative to points or fixed penalties when appropriate.

Commenting on the Strategic Framework for Road Safety, he said: "Our vision is to ensure Britain remains a world leader on road safety. We will only do this is if we bring people with us. This means cracking down on the most dangerous drivers without waging war on the law-abiding majority. "

Yesterday (May 11th) marked the launch of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-20, created by the United Nations.

Representatives from more than 100 groups met in London to help welcome in the campaign.
