UK transport sector 'needs to hire 240,000 staff by 2020'

Date: 3/7/2013

Britain's transport sector will have to hire 240,000 new employees by 2020 in order to keep pace with staff turnover and growth, a study published by People 1st has claimed.

As the IB Times reports, such levels of recruitment will be necessary to support upgrades on the network after the government pledged to spend billions on road improvements between 2015 and 2020.

Brian Wisdom, chief executive of People 1st, explained that the transport sector needs to ensure it remains attractive to future generations of workers in order to avoid any potential skills gap.

"While high levels of unemployment can provide a pool of people to recruit from, our industries need to position themselves as great places to work, with strong career pathways and clear progression routes," he said.

According to the study, 54 per cent of existing staff in the transport industry need training to enhance their customer handling skills.
