UK carbon reduction plans welcomed

Date: 14/10/2009

Plans to introduce road pricing and eco-driving lessons have been welcomed by green car experts.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) plans, which were released earlier this week, would also lead to rigid 70mph speed limits on motorways.

The measures should be taken to get the UK to meet its carbon emission targets.

Lord Turner, chair of the CCC, said: "With the carbon budgets in place, we now need to achieve a step change in the pace of emissions reduction."

Ben Lane, managing editor of WhatGreenCar.com, said that he was "generally very supportive of the government's recommendations".

"They are supporting consumer technology, [i.e.] electric, better control of carbon emissions on current vehicles through road pricing and speed limits. They are also looking at switching people to public transport," he added.

Earlier this year, the Department for Transport announced that the government would provide help to reduce the price of ultra-low carbon vehicles.
