UK potholes 'an election issue'

Date: 9/4/2010
The state of the country's roads is set to be a major issue during the upcoming election, a new poll has found.Conducted by the RAC Foundation with Ipsos Mori, the survey revealed that 77 per cent of Brits believe that potholes and damaged roads are a problem in their area, while 52 per cent are not happy with road maintenance.
Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said that whoever wins power at the next election, which is due to take place on May 6th, will need to make transport a priority in their policies.
"All candidates would do well to note people's dissatisfaction with the state of the road network which has leapt over the past year. Those who want to be our elected representatives ignore motorists' views at their peril," he added.
The Department for Transport recently announced that it is to issue new guidance to companies who dig up roads to ensure they replace it properly, hoping to reduce inconvenience to motorists.
