UK's roads 'have never been safer'

UK's roads 'have never been safer'

Date: 16/5/2011

The UK's road safety record is currently better than ever.

Such is the opinion of Neil Greig, Director of Policy and Research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, who says that in 2010, 2,222 road-related deaths were recorded, which is the lowest figure since records began.

"We're one of the top countries in the whole of the world for fewest road deaths," he adds.

Over the forthcoming weeks, Mr Greig says the country will also see a scheme from ministers being unveiled, which will set goals for the future.

He explains: "What we've had throughout the 1990s is a ten-year road safety strategy for whichever government was in power, setting targets. At the moment we have no targets for road safety for 2020."

Last week, the Department for Transport announced proposals to offer more drivers educational courses as an alternative to points on their licence or fixed penalties where it was deemed appropriate.
