Uninsured drivers 'land others with a huge cost'

Date: 31/8/2010
Millions of Britons are driving without insurance at a huge cost to other road users, it has been suggested.Tim Franklin, Chief Executive Officer of the Co-Operative Financial Services, was commenting on research that revealed uninsured drivers are landing motorists with a total bill of £1.25 billion per year.
The study, carried out by Co-Operative Insurance, estimated the average British road user pays an extra £50 in annual premiums to account for those without cover.
"Millions of people are deliberately flouting the law by not insuring their cars at massive cost to honest road users and the wider insurance industry, posing an unnecessary and unjustified risk," said Mr Franklin.
He added more work needs to be carried out by police, road safety organisations and the insurance sector to highlight the dangers of such drivers.
Earlier this month, a report by insurer AXA concluded around £35 of every person's annual car insurance fee pays for accidents caused by road rage.
