Uninsured drivers 'more likely to take risks'

Uninsured drivers 'more likely to take risks'

Date: 28/4/2011

Uninsured drivers are more likely to engage in risky behaviour on the road than those with car insurance, a road safety charity has warned.

Spokeswoman for Brake Emily Moxon explained that action is needed to ensure these "irresponsible and illegal drivers" are not allowed to use a car, as they could be more prone to crashing and even fleeing the scene of the incident than insured motorists.

The comments came after Direct Line and Brake released research findings suggesting that about one-tenth of British drivers have collided with another motorist who turned out to be uninsured.

Meanwhile, figures from Santander indicate that the chances of a man crashing while driving due to distractions are double those for a female driver.

Ms Moxon added: "There is no doubt that there are many men who drive carefully, but statistics clearly show that males are more likely to take risks that cause deaths and injuries on the roads."
