Uninsured drivers 'subject of government clampdown'

Uninsured drivers 'subject of government clampdown'

Date: 10/1/2011

Uninsured drivers in the UK could see their vehicles being impounded under new regulations expected to be approved by the coalition government in the next few weeks.

Even if the motor is not being driven, it will still be seen as an offence to keep it if the new rules come into force, unless the owner has obtained a Statutory Off Road Declaration form.

In addition, all vehicles in the UK will be registered on a central database and those without insurance could face a fine.

It is estimated by the Department for Transport that there are one million people in the UK driving without insurance and that by targeting them, the premiums paid by motorists who do have cover will come down.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and the insurance sector will have the ability to compare databases under the plans and people without insurance will first be sent a warning letter, before potentially being fined £100 if they still fail to take out a policy.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said: "People say, 'Well, it's sitting outside on the road outside my house. I'm not using it. It's taxed but doesn't need to be insured.' It has to be insured, because if someone decides to use it even for an emergency they will not be covered."

In related news, Direct Line recently warned that the batteries in electric cars could become a target for thieves due to their high value, meaning it is important the owners of such vehicles protect themselves with the right insurance.
