Uninsured motorists targeted by police

Date: 15/7/2010
Motorists who drive uninsured vehicles are being targeted by West Midlands Police.Officers will carry out a month-long operation and hold a number of checks in hot-spot areas where there are high numbers of people thought to be breaking the law.
In 2008-09, more than 21,000 cars were seized from uninsured drivers in the region.
Chief Inspector Chris Edwards said those who drive without the necessary cover are risking their livelihood, finances and mode of transport, as well as putting up the cost of insurance for law-abiding motorists.
"If drivers fail to get insured they will be prosecuted, could lose their cars and face fines, disqualification and even prison," he added.
A crushed car will be on display to show individuals the consequences of neglecting to insure their automobiles.
Officers will also be on the lookout for young drivers who do not bother with cover and Mr Edwards stated if they cannot afford to pay premiums they should not be on the road.
Brake and FedEx Express recently reminded motorists under the age of 25 of the dangers that come with driving at speed.
