University starters 'should be aware of road safety issues'

University starters 'should be aware of road safety issues'

Date: 7/9/2010

Young people heading to university for the new term should be careful on the roads.

That is the opinion of Alan Fisher, Principal Road Safety Adviser at Lancashire Road Safety group, who told the Lancashire Evening Post it is easy for students to get caught up in the excitement of meeting new friends.

But this should not be at the cost of road safety awareness, he said.

"We want to ensure that students take responsibility for their personal safety while enjoying all the wonderful experiences university has to offer," Mr Fisher remarked.

The organisation has offered tips for staying safe on the roads, such as planning routes in advance and checking tyres before starting journeys.

People should also make sure the driver's view, especially the blind spot, is not blocked in tightly-packed cars.

The Guardian recently reported residents in Cardiff are concerned the start of the university term will bring street problems such as parking and anti-social behaviour.
