Utility companies 'could be fined up to £25,000 for late-running road works'

Date: 22/12/2009
Utility companies who let their works on UK roads overrun could face increased fines under a new initiative announced today.Transport minister Sadiq Khan proposed that the maximum fine for utility companies who do not complete their works on schedule could be increased from the current maximum charge of £2,500 to as much as £25,000.
It is hoped the move will lead to less disruption for residents and commuters affected by roadworks.
Other plans announced by the minister included lane rental schemes for companies wanting to carry out works on the busiest roads.
Guidance for councils and utility companies is also to be issued, offering information on minimising the disruption caused by roadworks.
This is to include informing bus companies ahead of time of proposed works so alternative routes can be established and text messaging members of the public likely to be affected by the works.
Mr Khan commented on the proposals: "Some contractors are showing a blatant disregard for the needs of road users which is why I am proposing to increase the maximum fines for utility companies who let their road works overrun".
Meanwhile, a study released earlier this week by the Department for Transport showed there has been a small decrease in the amount of local classified road in good condition, in comparison to 2006 - 2007.
