Value-for-money rail network 'will help UK meet environmental challenges'

Value-for-money rail network 'will help UK meet environmental challenges'

Date: 21/12/2011

The UK needs a value-for-money rail network if it is to meet its environmental targets.

This is according to Public Transport Campaigner at Campaign for Better Transport Sophie Allain, who claimed current train fares are too expensive.

Despite tickets for train journeys in Britain already being the most costly in Europe, she pointed out a new raft of increases will be introduced in the new year.

This will make the country's rail network "less competitive," as well as taking the UK "further away from meeting green objectives," Ms Allain continued.

She also believes it will discourage people from travelling by rail, especially as fares will have gone up by 24 per cent by 2015 if the current rate of increases continues.

Network Rail recently announced it will be carrying out significant improvements to the train network over the festive period, but assured passengers the majority of routes will not be disrupted while work is carried out.
