Vauxhall Tube station set for £36m modernisation

Date: 16/5/2013
Vauxhall Tube station is set to undergo substantial transformation work in the coming years as part of a £36 million modernisation project designed to complement the Battersea Nine Elms redevelopment. The initiative involves increasing capacity and improving accessibility by making the station step-free, while more ticket gates will be introduced to cater for disabled passengers.
Indeed, with the number of people using the Tube at Vauxhall expected to increase by 40 per cent over the next few years, creating extra space will be vital in meeting the needs of (TfL) Transport for London's customers.
David Waboso, London Underground's Capital Programmes Director, explained that the project will result in passengers being able to move through the station at a quicker rate.
He added: "The works, along with other TfL investment in improving the local transport network, will help support the regeneration of the area.
"Careful thought has been given to the environmental impact of the works and how we can reduce costs."
While the scheme was initially expected to cost £45 million, the decision to use more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly construction methods has seen this cut to £36 million.
