Vauxhall Tube station to get £45m renovation

Date: 8/1/2013
Vauxhall Tube station is to undergo a £45 million revamp as part of proposals to extend the Northern Line to Battersea and breathe new life into Vauxhall and Nine Elms.So far construction firms have been invited to tender for the project, with work expected to begin in 2014.
One of the aims of the plans is to make the station more accessible and step-free, as well as expanding the gates in order to reduce congestion at busy times.
The ticket hall is to be renovated and the station, complete with its subways and stairways, will be refurbished to a high standard.
A lift is to be put in place to carry passengers between the ticket hall and the platforms and cyclists are to benefit from an off-carriage route built especially to serve their needs.
David Waboso, Capital Programmes Director at London Underground, said: "Vauxhall is a very busy Tube station, with about 21 million people using it annually, and is set to get busier.
"This upgrade will make the station step-free, will give passengers more space and will make journeys through the station quicker and more pleasant."
He went on to say that the work to be carried out at Vauxhall Tube station will go a long way to regenerating the local area.
It will be supported by other Transport for London investment designed to improve infrastructure on the local transport network.
Last month the government approved a loan of up to £1 billion for London Underground to fund an extension of the Northern Line as far as the Battersea Power Station site.
In order for work of this scale to go ahead, a Transport and Works Act Order must be obtained and the application for this has been submitted, with it expected to be confirmed in the spring.
