Vehicle safety reminder during winter weather

Vehicle safety reminder during winter weather

Date: 10/1/2011

The recent cold weather and dark evenings has seen a spate of "frost-jacking" cases in the UK, leading one group to urge motorists to keep car security measures in mind.

Tracker, a firm that offers stolen vehicle tracking services, points to the recent burglary of BBC Breakfast presenter Susanna Reid's home, during which her car was also stolen, as one example of this.

Indeed, the firm says that motorists should consider making the safety of their vehicle a new year's resolution by following a few simple security measures.

The recent cold weather may have caused some people to unwittingly become more relaxed when it comes to keeping their cars safe, such as by leaving the engine running but the vehicle unattended as they attempt to de-ice.

Tracker notes that this is something people should never do, while they should also ensure they always lock and secure their car, even if they are only leaving it for a few minutes.

Vehicle documents, spare keys and valuables should never be stored inside the car, while at home the keys should always be kept out of sight.

Stuart Chapman, Police Liaison Officer for Tracker, said: "People need to think about keeping their car keys safe, rather than just leaving them where they can be seen easily by thieves."

The Daily Mail has claimed that Ms Reid may have been burgled after a piece for BBC Breakfast was filmed inside her home.
