Volcanic ash cloud 'cost Manchester Airport millions'

Date: 28/5/2010
The ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano has cost Manchester Airport around £10 million, according to new figures.More than 300,000 passengers were affected by the airspace ban, the Manchester Evening News reports.
A spokesman from the airport told the publication the disruption did not only have a massive impact on staff and customers, but also on the region, which showed just how much the north-west relies on aviation.
He added he hopes the episode is over as people place a lot of importance on their summer holidays.
However, the news provider also stated that airport staff are preparing for possible closures over the coming months if the volcano continues to erupt.
Earlier this month, the UK Civil Aviation Authority explained aircraft will now be able to fly if volcanic ash is recorded in the skies.
Scientists have identified a new zone in which planes can safely travel for a limited period of time.
