Volvo announces plan to boost air quality

Date: 16/7/2010

Drivers are set to be given help in choosing a vehicle that is good for the environment through a new strategy from Volvo.

The manufacturer has produced a three-point plan for improving air quality, with providing information to motorists one of the main priorities of the scheme.

While carbon dioxide is a concern, it highlighted particulates and hydrocarbons as emissions that cause pollution - in urban areas in particular - and cited high asthma rates as among the consequences.

Managing Director of Volvo Car UK Peter Rask noted the firm has long had sustainability and environmental issues in mind when designing its vehicles.

"Our cars perform very well in all tailpipe emissions and some, but not all, are best-in-class. However, this is more about encouraging greater transparency in the automotive industry across all emissions," he said.

Mr Rask recently welcomed Mayor of London Boris Johnson's proposal to make low-emitting vehicles exempt from the capital's congestion charge.
