Volvo has best carbon reduction scheme, according to the T&E

Date: 19/10/2011
Volvo Car Corporation has been announced top among European car makers for keeping carbon dioxide emissions to a minimum. The European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) has released the results of its sixth annual analysis of carbon management schemes by car manufacturers.
Europe's eight largest automobile companies successfully cut emissions between two and six per cent last year, except Volvo which reduced its output by nine per cent.
Part of Volvo's environmental initiative included its "DRIVe towards zero" scheme, with particular market success for the fuel-efficient diesel engines from the DRIVe range.
Overall, carbon dioxide emissions from new cars in the EU dropped by 3.7 per cent in 2010, in keeping with the EU's legally binding carbon standard that was implemented in 2008.
Employing long term targets for the car industry, T&E suggests, will help develop the necessary technology to cut oil use and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
