'Vulnerable' cyclists urged to switch on lights

Date: 7/10/2010

Cyclists have been urged to ensure their lights are switched on to help prevent a rise in collisions as the evenings grow darker.

Hector Nicolson, Road Safety Officer at Central Scotland Police, told the Stirling Observer people on bikes are "vulnerable" and need to be aware it can be impossible for drivers to see them unless they have taken necessary safety measures.

He reminded road users all vehicles are required to turn on their lights at sunset or when visibility is poor.

"If in doubt, switch your lights on," Mr Nicolson said.

"Those who use our roads in whatever capacity have a huge responsibility in keeping our roads collision free, especially with the onset of the winter months," he continued.

Last month, Katy Jenkins - Communications Manager for the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia - encouraged motorcyclists to refresh their skills ahead of new road dangers brought about by the onset of autumn, the Kidderminster Shuttle reported.
