'Vulnerable' motorcyclists urged to attend safety event

Date: 20/10/2010
Road safety officers have urged young motorcyclists and scooter riders in Peterborough to attend a safety event in a bid to reduce the number of accidents in the city. The Peterborough Evening Telegraph reports the session is being organised by the SaferPeterborough partnership and will give youngsters the chance to take a skills test and learn about correct riding equipment.
Recent figures have shown a quarter of bikers injured in collisions in the area are between 16 and 21 years old.
Clair George, Road Safety Officer for the partnership, said motorcyclists and scooter riders are "vulnerable" and make up 20 per cent of those killed or injured on the city's roads despite only representing one per cent of traffic.
She stated the event "will encourage more interaction and discussion with young people" through the delivery of safety messages by experts.
Earlier this month, it emerged the number of serious motorcycle accidents dropped significantly in north Lancashire following the introduction of the police's Bikewatch programme.
