Wearing a seatbelt 'can save your life'

Wearing a seatbelt 'can save your life'

Date: 3/9/2010

Seatbelts can save lives and there is no room for complacency on the issue, according to one expert.

Leslie Harrold, Road Safety Manager at Grampian Police, said people need to remember to wear a seatbelt on every single car journey, according to the Press and Journal.

His comments come after police officers across Scotland found 313 individuals who were not strapped in their vehicles during a 24-hour crackdown.

In response, the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpos) in Scotland stated the statistic reveals road users are flouting the law and showing a disregard for their safety.

Chief Superintendent Charlie Common of Lothian and Borders Police, who is the Head of Casualty Reduction at Acpos, added drivers and passengers must take responsibility for wearing their own seatbelt.

Failure to do so endangers both themselves and other motorists, he remarked.

Last month, the BBC reported a campaign was launched in Scotland to encourage people to put on a belt every time they embark on a road journey.
