Wellington Mayor calls for improvements to public transport

Wellington Mayor calls for improvements to public transport

Date: 18/6/2013

Celia Wade-Brown, Mayor of New Zealand capital Wellington, has called for the city to make progress with its attempts to introduce more efficient public transport services.

The Mayor highlighted the proposed (BRT) Bus Rapid Transit route along the transport spine between Wellington Railway Station and Wellington hospital, explaining that improvements are necessary to expand the scope of existing networks.

"Wellington City Council has been consistent in its desire to promote better public transport and strong urban design in the capital," Ms Wade-Brown said.

"On the evidence presented, BRT has benefits similar to light rail, at a more affordable cost and with the added flexibility to expand the network to outer suburbs."

Her comments were echoed by Councillor Andy Foster, Wellington City Council's Transport Portfolio Leader, who said that efforts are being made to ensure transport services run quicker and more reliably as the authorities attempt to tackle congestion in the capital.
