Welsh Councils facing road repair costs following severe winter

Date: 25/4/2013
Councils in North Wales are facing a total bill of at least £2 million in order to repair the damage inflicted by the winter's severe weather, the BBC reports. And with transport infrastructure having been hit by the freezing temperatures seen in the first four months of the year, road improvements are expected to account for much of the costs.
Indeed, Gwynedd Council claims that the effects of the weather could force it to spend £600,000 more than it had budgeted for, while Denbighshire has estimated that £200,000 will be spent by its roads department alone.
Flintshire, which saw snow drifts up to six-metres high, is expected to spend £1 million on clearing roads and removing fallen trees, although council house repairs will also be covered by this money.
North Wales was hit particularly hard by the prolonged spell of severe weather, with roads blocked and public transport disrupted by snowfall and ice.
