Welsh cycling races cancelled on road safety grounds

Date: 3/9/2010
Police in Wales have called off a number of cycling races in North Wales because of concerns about road safety.According to the BBC, police have informed cycling clubs that they must have fully-trained marshals present at the events.
David Hughes of Clwb Rasio Mona stated many helpers have been unable to complete training courses as they are mainly available in the south of the country.
Officers have expressed concerns that marshals at the races may be unable to deal with traffic problems safely, he continued.
Inspector Guy Blackwell said adequately-staffed time trials of this kind would not normally be banned.
"However, we have and will refuse large groups of cyclists on the road who are not affiliated with the [Welsh Cycling Association (WCA)]," he commented.
Trained marshals, such as those of the WCA, ensure events run safely, he added.
The WCA was established in 1934 with the original purpose of running the 12 Hour Championship.
