Why car auctions could be a better choice than scrap

Why car auctions could be a better choice than scrap

Date: 20/1/2011

Car auctions may in some cases be a better option for people who are planning to scrap their car, according to one sector commentator.

Tom Chance, director of Giveacar.co.uk, said his firm had several vehicles that the owners had believed were only suitable for scrapping, when they were in fact more valuable.

"In an auction they can be a bit more than scrap value, maybe a few hundred pounds. It is worth looking into every route available before you decide to scrap your car," he advised.

However, Mr Chance added that the majority of vehicles that come to the firm are scrapped, rather than being put up for auction.

Speaking of the environmental benefits of car salvage, he explained that to help the planet it is worthwhile keeping a vehicle going for as long as possible and to reuse parts, while this can also help to keep the cost of motors down.

When purchasing a second-hand car, HPI recently reminded people not to be taken in by an attractive exterior, but to take the time to find out about the vehicle's history.
