Wi-fi to be introduced at 25 ScotRail stations

Wi-fi to be introduced at 25 ScotRail stations

Date: 14/5/2013

Rail stations and trains across the ScotRail network are set to be equipped with wi-fi facilities as the operator looks to improve the passenger experience on its services.

The scheme will see 25 railway stations and 380 electric trains fitted with the technology, and the initiative has been made possible thanks to £1.25 million worth of funding.

One third of ScotRail's fleet will be equipped with wi-fi capabilities once the project is completed, while stations that are set to play a key part in transporting visitors during next year's Ryder Cup will also be upgraded to offer wireless internet services.

Transport Minister Keith Brown explained that the improvements will help to benefit the network and plans are in place for wi-fi to be installed on all ScotRail trains by 2019.

"Combined with the station enhancements, this will help keep Scotland’s railways at the forefront of wi-fi installation," he said.

"I am pleased that in advance of the major events taking place in 2014, visitors flying into Prestwick and Glasgow airports, who then join the rail network, will be able to get access to wi-fi on every train."
