Winter tyres recommended for cold conditions

Winter tyres recommended for cold conditions

Date: 6/12/2010

The current big freeze has been causing widespread problems for motorists and tyre manufacturers are now recommending drivers kit out their vehicles for winter.

Designed for cool and wet conditions, winter tyres can improve braking and do not damage the surface of roads in the way that snow chains and studded wheels can.

The products have a higher natural rubber content than standard models, in addition to silica compounds that provide improved grip on cold and wet surfaces.

Director of UK charity RoadSafe Adrian Walsh commented: "In winter, these tyres are a legal requirement in some European countries, including Germany and Austria."

He added a series of UK motoring organisations also recommend drivers fit them during cold weather.

According to the British Tyre Manufacturers Association, car braking can be improved by as much as five metres at 60mph on a wet road at five degrees C using winter tyres.

In addition, acceleration and steering may also be enhanced by investing in items that are designed to operate in such conditions.
