Winter transport review confirmed

Date: 30/3/2010
Secretary of state for transport Andrew Adonis has confirmed that an independent review into the response of the country's transport systems to the worst winter for a generation will take place. The review is due to consist of two phases - one to identify measures that can be put in place for the next winter and one to identify what can be done to prepare for severe weather in the future.
"Following a decade of relatively mild weather, the UK has now experienced two harsh winters in succession. For the most part our transport networks have coped well, but there are lessons that can be learned," said Lord Adonis.
The review will be chaired by David Quarmby CBE, chair of the RAC foundation and a former chief executive of the Strategic Rail Authority.
Assistant chief executive of Cambridgeshire County Council Brian Smith will support Mr Quarmby, as will Chris Green, a former chief executive of Virgin Trains and a current non-executive director at Network Rail.
