Work begins on London cable car

Date: 7/7/2011
Plans to regenerate east London have sprung into action this week, as work begins on the city's new cable car.On both sides of the Thames - in the Royal Victoria Dock on the north side and Greenwich Peninsula on the south - construction is underway of the two passenger stations.
In addition, obstructions beneath the water's surface are being searched for ahead of piling work.
This part of the city has recently been awarded the title of Enterprise Zone and according to Transport for London (TfL) the cable car will provide an important boost for the economic regeneration of the area.
It will create a link between the O2 and ExCel venues, undercutting current travel times by five minutes and providing views across the river, and it is on track to be completed by next summer.
The project is part of Mayor Boris Johnson's plans to transform the locale into a hub for businesses, tourism and residents.
In May, TfL announced that improvements have also been made to river transport services in London in an attempt to encourage more commuters and visitors to travel by water.
