Work begins on safe new cycle routes in London

Date: 14/4/2011
Commuters in London who cycle to work could soon be able to use one of two new Cycle Superhighways to get to their office safely.According to Transport for London (TfL), the Barclays-sponsored project has seen construction commence on the two routes, which will run from Bow to Aldgate and Wandsworth to Westminster.
It is hoped that the paths - which are aimed at making it easier and safer for people to cycle in the capital - will be open by July.
The first two Barclays Cycle Superhighways - which run from Merton to the City and Barking to Tower Gateway - were opened last summer and since then TfL has provided the funding necessary to create 4,113 new bicycle spaces along the two paths.
Kulveer Ranger, the Mayor of London's Transport Advisor, says: "Thousands of Londoners have been using the first two highways and, by the end of this summer, we will have four direct cycle routes into the centre of the capital."
In February, the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme topped the transport category in the Brit Insurance Design Awards.
