Work on £15m Taunton link road given green light

Date: 21/5/2013
A £15 million project to construct a new link road in Taunton is set to go ahead after Local Transport Minister Norman Baker gave the scheme the green light. The upgrade is expected to improve connections across the town, while at the same time increasing access to a new development in the area.
Mr Baker praised the importance of the initiative in reducing traffic through the centre of Taunton, while also highlighting its potential to facilitate economic growth as part of the Firepool regeneration plans.
"As well as relieving congestion in the town it will also help promote alternative modes of travel to the private car - improving access for pedestrians and vulnerable road users and providing an alternative bus route," he said.
The project includes modifications to the existing roundabout at the junction of Priory Avenue and Priory Fields, while a former rail bridge will be replaced and a new bridge built over the River Tone.
